10 Best Cities To Live, Work & Make Movies in 2010

The Hughes Brothers direct Denzel Washington on the Albuquerque set of The Book of Eli (2010).

Some say that money is the root of all evil, while others hold that evil follows money’s absence. Likewise for today’s independent moviemakers, while some contend that bigger budgets open up more creative options, others maintain that limited budgets have a better chance of generating true innovation.

The latter seems to be proving true in American cities big and small, as increasing numbers of would-be auteurs make the leap from moviegoer to moviemaker. They’re being aided by the low cost of digital technologies, which make the medium ever more democratic at the same time that costs creep lower. The barriers that existed for independent moviemakers just a few years ago have all but disappeared, not only in terms of accessibility to reasonably priced production and post-production equipment, but with distribution opportunities, too. Best of all, freshly minted moviemakers don’t even need to leave home to make cinema happen.

For the past decade, MovieMaker’s editors have paid careful attention to location trends. From recent financial incentives to new soundstages, we have tracked these developments while being vocal proponents of the “backyard/backlot” lifestyle—the idea that one should be able to shoot close to where he or she lives.

We also understand that moviemaking is not a solo enterprise; it’s an endeavor that benefits greatly from the support of like-minded artists. It would stand to reason, then, that moviemakers in traditional “cinema cities” such as New York and Los Angeles might have an edge over their peers in lesser-known production areas. But with previously under-utilized areas such as Shreveport, Louisiana and Albuquerque, New Mexico continuing to climb our “best places” list year after year, the truth is that moviemaking can happen anywhere—as long as there are creative artists willing to make a go of it and a community of supporters happy to nurture their talents.

Here, then, is MM’s 10th annual ranking of the country’s best cities in which to be an independent moviemaker.

1. Albuquerque, NM
2. Los Angeles, CA
3. Shreveport, LA
4. New York, NY
5. Austin, TX
6. Stamford, CT
7. Boston, MA
8. Detroit, MI
9. Philadelphia, PA
10. Seattle, WA

Nik Halik Predicted the Global Financial Crisis – in 2003

The following is an extract from a popular news site. In response to the main article which castigates the financial power brokers and bankers of the world, one reader describes his experience when he attended one of Nik Halik’s seminars in Cairns, Australia, back in March 2003.

Cairns, being a tropical centre in North Queensland, is well known for it’s banana growing industry. Bearing this in mind will help you appreciate why the writer gave his comments the title “The Taste of Banana”.

Try to explain to someone the taste of banana ….. and you’ll have the same success as trying to convince anyone the financial collapse was planned, implemented and precipitated by financial controllers in the USA. Regarded as just business by the big end of town, the same psychopaths running the casino economics with the world economies are in the business of playing with other peoples money. They had plenty of practice in the run up with the California Electricity scandals of the 90’s.

In march 2003 I attended an options trading seminar in Cairns Australia which ran for three days. After the seminar, many stayed behind to chat and say their goodbyes. Someone asked the presenter Nik Halik whose mentor state side breathed the rarefied air of wall street, what plans he had for his portfolio for the next decade.

He went on to brief those present about what to expect for the years ahead and how to navigate the planed financial tsunami coming their way. The killer info was the USA was going to crash their economy in 2008. You didn’t have to be a genius to work out it would be in September. The advice was to minimise debt by the end of 2007, to downsize real estate assets into cash and commodities.

Some of my immediate family listened, while others would smile with a strange look on their face. With an early retirement, super cashed in and all debt paid out, with some physical possession of precious metal by the end of 2007, the money spent to hear what we were told that day was worth every cent.

This is not end game, we’ve only experienced round one. Forget the politically correct conspiracy theory crap, this is just business. They are far from finished with us yet and if people can’t get that inside their brain box by rational research from quality sources, perhaps the prospect of protecting loved ones and children from a future far less cruel would not seem such a waste of time.

The full article and comments can be found here:

Nik Halik founded the Financial Freedom Institute in 2001 as an education vehicle to train and inspire men and women to “sieze the day” and take control of their own financial futures. His foundation platform for achieving this, is the stock market and in particular, option trading. Due to advances in technology, option trading can provide a business opportunity that can be run from anywhere in the world where there’s an internet connection.

The Stock Market is not going away. Those who know it’s secrets can expect a lifetime income. If such a prospect interests you, check out Nik Halik’s official website by visiting Nik Halik’s Wealth Super Highway

DEADLINE FOR THE WRITERS BOOT CAMP FELLOWSHIP - February 25th

Fellowship Details

Each month, the Writers Boot Camp Fellowship awards three $5000 full scholarships to our Online Professional Membership (OPM), including an opportunity to compete for an annual writing/development deal with Writers Boot Camp Productions and/or a studio, network or independent producer.

The Writers Boot Camp Fellowship is unlike any other:

* a minimum of three awards are granted monthly
* Creative Categories change each month, reflecting viable genres and project parameters for both feature film and original television series
* Selection is only the beginning of the Fellowship process.

Monthly Creative Categories also include awards for diversity in subject matter and lead characters, as well as inspired writers based on personal experience and circumstances. After Fellows complete a project within the first six months of OPM coursework, they compete for the development deal with our sponsoring partner.

Writers Boot Camp encourages its current members and alumni to apply. If selected as a Fellow, your coursework will be extended, and as a Fellow you will be eligible to compete for the development deal six months after your selection.

The deadline for application is Thursday, February 25, 2010.

Candidates need the following to apply for the Fellowship:

* An original idea for a feature film or television series pilot.
* One scene (no more than three pages) conveying the entertaining potential of your idea.
* A short paragraph on your goals and completed online application with fee.
* A commitment of at least 10 hours per week for your creative and writing process through OPM.

February Creative Categories – your submission MUST be in the categories listed below to be eligible for the February Fellowship:

Feature Film: Romantic Comedy
Television Pilot: Half-Hour Relationship Comedy

When a Romantic Comedy or Comedy TV Series does break out, it can achieve a wide audience. But the challenge of anticipating the social zeitgeist a few years out and transcending cliche in these genres is not a no-brainer. Whether you're currently in love, or not, these genres require articulate characterization and relationship progression that is particularly electric.

Too many past candidates have underestimated the competitive nature of this Fellowship. If you're planning to submit an idea, it will have to include more than just a set-up. The set-up in a feature story and the situation of a series can intimate potential, but it's the development of the middle of the story or story line that will provide the momentum of comedy and that will sustain the rooting interest of romance.

The question is not only how to create a prescient comic platform but also how to complicate and extend the entertainment in a more thoroughly fresh way.

Submission Tips and Info:

In the first five months, we have found that it's the scene work (no more than three pages) that can differentiate a writer from the pack and create separation from the other worthy ideas.

For writers submitting TV pilot ideas, remember that half-hour scripts may be either single-camera film, formatted the same as feature films, or multi-camera sitcom, in which page format is double-spaced. It's always helpful to compare your idea to the lineage of past and current shows and to articulate your vision accordingly.

Apply Now to Become a Fellow!

SPECIAL DISCOUNT FOR INFOLIST.com!!

Use your special discount code INFOLIST0210 and get 15% OFF the cost of submission – that's just $45.90 (normally $54) to submit (due to the significant costs of labor, evaluation, administration, marketing and ongoing instructor support, there is a fee for applying). You can also add additional categories to submit for (such as Diversity for an additional $10.20 (normally $12)) - in any case, no matter how many categories you submit for, you get 15% OFF the entire submission fee!

The application deadline is Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 11:59pm!

Winners will be notified by Monday, March 1.
